Asthma Anyone?
May 2nd, 2009Spray the air “freshener”, take your allergy meds; burn the chemical candle, take an aspirin for your headache; use overly fragranced detergents and fabric softeners, grab your inhaler. We are absolutely crazy in this country! Don’t people understand that it’s the chemical scents in EVERYTHING we use from our hair products to what we wash the dishes with? 90% of what’s on the market in your average supermarket or drugstore is filled with synthetics smells that are harmful to us; from our actual nasal passages to our hearts and lungs.
When I teach, I ask the group how many of them have children who have allergies or asthma. The number doesn’t surprise me but it usually surprises them as they raise their hands in response. Next question is, “How many of you have “plug in” air fresheners or use…..then I list everyday household products with chemical scents. The answers are almost always “yes” they are using these items and have never realized that they may be at least irritating the existing allergies/asthma but also, may be actually causing them.
Years ago even before we started this company, I couldn’t stand to be in room with air fresheners and would quite impolitely take them out of Amy’s house when I was there to visit. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that she began to recognize the dangers of having the chemicals around her family. It was a normal thought process that we should trust what’s on the market to not be harmful to humans.
Guess again!!!
Watch and see what will happen in the next few years regarding lawsuits surrounding chemicals and illness. It’s going to be sad but interesting.
I’m actually not in my sarcastic mode of writing today but was watching TV and shaking my head once again at the lack of knowledge regarding chemicals and allergies.
One quick story….I had a lecture to give and there was a 15 year boy in it. After the talk, he said to me, ” I’m only here tonight because I had nothing else to do but you taught me so much. Now I know why I sneeze in the shower everyday…it’s the products and I’m going to change!”
And that’s why I do what I do.
