Friendship and a Passionate Mission Keep these Modern Mermaids Swimming Ahead

Jupiter residents Audra and Amy met in high school in Massachusetts, and they’ve been close friends ever since. A friendship that survives both time and the stresses of going into business together is rare. “We have our ups and downs,” Amy says. “almost everyday.”

Fortunately, they share a “green” sensibility and a belief that many health ills, including cancer, are often the result of exposure to chemicals in everyday products – like cleaning solutions. That vision led them to create their company, Modern Mermaids, and to formulate a line of cleaning products that is natural and safe. As their tagline asserts: “because we still need to breathe while we clean.”

The scientific evidence that commercial toxins in many products may contribute to a high incidence of cancer resonates particularly with Amy. She lost both parents to cancer at an early age.

“Our mission is important,” states Amy, “it seems that people are just starting to realize the level of toxins in our homes and we want to raise awareness whenever possible.”

Audra has been an advocate of the natural approach to life since long before it was fashionable and recently stopped teaching in the holistic spa venue to pursue the new business full time.

Today, they sell their cleaning products at local Green Markets in Palm Beach County. The process of creating them is complex. First they obtain base cleaning solutions created with “food grade” natural cleaning agents. Then they add specific essential oils that both enhance the cleaning properties and create different fragrances.

“ Imagine cleaning a room with a product that smells like mint, energizes you and works great!” Audra says.

The new entrepreneurs will be taking their products to Cape Cod over the summer – to reconnect with their childhood roots and spread the green word. Lest anyone think that friends working together is always a lark, Amy says, “I sometimes think we should film a reality show around how we operate together. It can be pretty funny!”
